What is Reflective Consultation?

Reflective consultation is a relationship and strengths-based process that encourages professionals to explore their thoughts and feelings about their work with individuals, children, families, and communities. Reflective consultation offers professionals the experience of being heard, validated, and affirmed.  Critical to this approach is the focus on all of the relationships involved, including the relationship between the professional and the reflective consultant, between the professional and other adults/parents/caregivers, and between the parent/caregivers and young children. Understanding how each of these relationships affects the other is part of the “parallel process” that is a core element in reflective consultation.

Reflective consultation fosters a safe and supportive space for practitioners to examine their thoughts, emotions, values, and assumptions about their work and the families, individuals, and children they serve. It supports and facilitates relationship-based practice and is considered to help prevent burnout and promote work satisfaction.

The Best Practice Guidelines for Reflective Supervision/Consultation (Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health, 2018) clarifies the difference between Reflective Supervision and Reflective Consultation:

Reflective Supervision is when a professional receives RS/C from a qualified supervisor within their agency or program. It is recommended that the supervisor schedule a meeting devoted to reflective supervision separate from administrative and clinical supervision. Reflective Consultation is when an outside consultant is hired to provide RS/C to an individual or group.
